The Idle Girl

Barbara Klein blog, Marketing, projects 55 Comments

I have not been an idle girl.

You want to get to know a really idle girl who lets others do her work and even gets to marry her prince, read it here .

Speaking about morale …

If you are interested in reading (and learning) some more by the Brothers Grimm, here is a link to a free kindle edition of their fairy tales on Amazon.

2012 has seen me getting started on two projects next to installing some tools on my site:

366 Photo Project
My friend Kaarina Dillabough introduced me to this exciting project (taking a picture each day) and I am tumbling away.

For all of you interested in photography why do you not join us?

Update in November 2015: For a full year I posted one image per day. I have kept the photo site on tumblr but changed it to: Late Bloomers Photography and you will find monthly updates there.

Pinterest
What is Pinterest? According to Pinterest “it is a virtual pinboard which lets you organize and share all the beautiful things you find on the web. People use pinboards to plan their weddings, decorate their homes and organize their favorite recipes. Best of all you can browse pinboards created by other people. Browsing pinboards is a fun way to discover new things and get inspiration from people who share your interests.”

Pinterest has gained momentum in the last weeks and everybody in social media speaks about it.

I joined Pinterest some months ago and did not do much about it. My pinboards were messy and unorganised. Clearly, I did not see the potential in the beginning.

After having read Brankica’s very informative and useful Complete Pinterest Guide | SEO and Traffic Generation With Pinterest at Blog Like a Star I cleaned up my place and it starts to look promising.

Have a look: http://pinterest.com/latebloomers/

So far, it is by invitation only, I will gladly send you an invitation, just let me know.

Apart from that I enjoy to read and would like to share some facts about most translated books with you:

Pilgrim’s Progress: 200
The Litlle Prince: 189
Steps to Christ: 140

And 2012 has been treating me very nicely: Matt Armendariz of Matt Bites offered an autographed copy of his delicious cookbook On a Stick! to four lucky people commenting on food photography and guess what – YES! I am among the four! Thank you, Matt, and I apologise for the postage costs to Switzerland!

I can feel the high energy count all around me, so share your stories with us:

What have you been doing in the first 10 days of the baby year?

  1. Well, my first 10 days I have been making my hair look better; you never know when I might need a good hair day, huh? It has been rock-n-roll so far; working on some new opportunities in my day job.

I just got in Pinterest this weekend so I will be using Brankica’s info from her post to help me figure it out. Sounded a little like work though; we’ll have to see how it goes……….:).

Now a cookbook would be something cool to win; corn dogs are great.

Hope your week is good so far.

    1. @bdorman264 Hi Bill, you are lucky to have so much hair it takes you ten days to make it look better! From the hints you dropped in the last weeks I am expecting some bomb-like news from your part?

You sneaked in there in Pinterest, I have noticed, having no boards yet, you clever thing. Once you have started it is easy, I use it as a colourful notebook, I have some ideas how it might help me with the webshop (not up yet …). Social media coming in now in droves will also change its character. Short, it is a very interesting platform to be watched.

And that cookbook – I am a lucky girl, will not stick my dog anywhere, I will have you know, BTW she is far too big (size of a pony).

My week has been great so far, just came back from Zurich where I met a friend and we had a great time discussing business ideas. Good feeling to feel appreciated and respected.

And you? Interesting date coming up this week: Friday 13!

      1. @Late_Bloomers Well, I can share http://www.fantasyofflight.com is now a customer we are working on their insurance and risk management program; and I certainly have other ‘real’ opportunities that will happen soon as well.

I sneak in everywhere; just showing up I can do…………..:).

Glad you had a good time in Zurich; sounds like fun. Was there any wine consumed?

        1. @bdorman264 Congrats, I checked them out, nice and attractive website, with their lilne of business this is certainly a top customer!

No locked doors secure enough …. ;-)!

Do I have a reputation? But you are right: at the end we had a glass of Prosecco (nothing compared to your size XXL champagne glasses) and to add something to my reputation: I asked the waiter what kind of Prosecco, he looked at me as if he had seen some moon cow and said “It is Prosecco, from Italy”. Thank you very much, I would not have known!

Have a lovely Wednesday, please, come back to Pinterest and show us what you like!

  2. You’ve got a lot of fun projects on tap Barbara! I wouldn’t dare peek at Pinterest – I’d never be able to leave!

I’ve got a lot on tap myself! Over Christmas we fleshed out a couple of Terra Cotta Pendant projects and hit the ground running in January. We’re on a brisk schedule which also involves social media and growing the blog a bit. It’s all fun and I’m excited about 2012! Now if I could just make this after-Christmas cold go away LOL

Congrats on winning a cookbook! I won a book on SEO from Brankica’s site! I’m studying it now, or will be once my head-cold clears 😮

    🙂

    Lori

    1. @Lori Hi Lori! I thought exactly of you in connection with Pinterest and your Terra Cotta Pendant business. There are opportunities on that platform I have not checked out myself. Did you read Brankica’s post on it – highly recommendable.

I like that: “I’ve got a lot on tap myself!” The understatement of the year, you busy bee. I am convinced 2012 will be the year for all of us, with that energy high we enjoy. Did you try grated ginger, lemon, honey and hot water for your cold? This works wonders for me. 😉

Thanks for the congrats, yes, I remember you winning the SEO book, I was so happy for you! Though, honestly, I prefer the cookbook!

      Hugs, Barbara

      1. @Late_Bloomers I’ve been doing honey tea with lemon (thanks to Claudia’s suggestion!) The cold has pretty much run its course now. Good thing – my Christmas tree is still up! LOL Ah, that’s a job for Sunday!

I never thought of Pinterest in terms of Terra Cotta Pendants. I’ll have to give that some thought. Thanks!

        Lori

        1. @Lori@Late_Bloomers OHHHHHH Lori….Barbara is SO right….I think that Terra Cotta Pendants would definitely benefit from Pinterest visibility. As a matter of fact, I am going to go right over there and “pin” it…Barbara is a genius….Plus, the added benefit is that Pinterest is fun!

        2. @SocialMediaDDS@Lori good morning to you, my favourite dream team! Thanks for the lovely compliment, reminds me of Jeannie, I might do an apparition these days! But you are right, Pinterest is fun and has some more potential: I will go there, repin it from your board, Claudia. Have to think about a special board set up for it …. tons of ideas. Have a lovely Wednesday, love you, big hugs!

        3. @SocialMediaDDS@Lori good morning to you, my favourite dream team! Thanks for the lovely compliment, reminds me of Jeannie, I might do an apparition these days! 4. @Late_Bloomers@SocialMediaDDS Thank you guys – that’s so sweet! I’m feeling like I don’t have time to start Pinterest this year (so much on my plate yada yada!) but I’ll watch what you guys do. Maybe in 2013?

  3. WOW…you are DEFINITELY NOT idle….whew….you have a lot on your plate!!

You know I am loving Pinterest and your recommendation for people to read @Brankica ‘s post on it was excellent. I am having fun organizing and pinning and repinning and pinning and repinning…..yikes…I think I’m hooked….or pinned.

The list of the most translated books was interesting. I happen to be partial to The Little Prince….a beautiful story.

Congrats on the cookbook win…you’ll have to pin it…. 😉

And, finally, maybe I should do the 366 Photo Project…. hmmmm.

    xo

    Claudia

    1. @SocialMediaDDS Hi Claudia, Great, you are at Pinterest, I was looking for you but could not find you …. There is so much potential in it!

And you know The Little Prince is my absolute favourite: “You only see with your heart”, it brings tears to my eyes when I read it and then I look at the drawings and have to smile.

I pinned a picture of Matt today, I really like it, specially with the caption Matt bites!

Yes, do the 366 Photo Project, I love your pictures on flickr.

      Big hugs, Barbara

  4. Thanks for the mention, Barbara, and I’m delighted to have introduced you to Project 366, via shonali burke . Thanks Shonali!

I, like Lori, am afraid to even look at another platform, but Pinterest is certainly getting lots of attention lately. How does one get invited? And how do I make the cut to be one of your favourite blogs on Pinterest, my friend?

Lots of new decisions, commitments and actions being taken here: will share when the time is right:) Cheers! Kaarina

    1. @KDillaboughshonali burke Thanks, my dear friend, for including Shonali. Sorry, Shonali, this will not happen again!

I will send you an invitation to your email address, seeems that some have encountered problems with invites via Facebook.

There is sure an extra amount of energy around, love how we seem to “potentate” (now, I am not very good at math, the name for that function eludes me) it. Help, do you know what I mean, of course, you do!

Looking forward to hear about yours! Have a great Wednesday, with or without snow shoes, hugs, Barbara

  5. Hey,

I haven’t started on PinInterest yet… would love an invite if you can spare one! Project 366 is amazing. Though I am not huge in photography, I might get clicking soon. I recommended it to a friend of mine and she is totally in love with it!

The first 10 days, I was lost on reading for the past few months. So, this time I made it a point to read more. I read The French Lover (Taslima Nasrin) and the translation of the Arabian Nights. Also, I have got my hands of the set of the “Diary of a Wimpy Kid” which was totally for teenagers but I enjoyed it nonetheless! Some more books lying to be read!

    1. @Hajra HI Hajra, Do it, do the 366 Project, it is fun and it is another way of focussing on what is happening around you, More benefits: 366 pictures of your year all together, by using tumblr and sharing on Pinterest (the invite is on its way) we will master (why not mistress?) some more social media!

I am like you: reading books for children or teenagers, I have heard about The French Lover, what do you think about it?

      Have a wonderful day!

      1. @Late_Bloomers Hey! I liked the book…but it was bit dragging at the end. Kind of got repetitive.

But I like it on the whole. Thanks for the invite! 🙂

  6. Hey barbara klein,

Great post with some really useful links, hot footing my way over to check out the Pinterest one. Started out on there last week and well to be honest my boards are a bit of a mess. Something to sort out at the weekend, I think 🙂 It is ever so slightly addictive so I am trying to control myself!

Les Aventure de Tintin get my vote from that list but I still treasure the complete works of Hans Christian Andersen that I got as a Christmas present in the 1970s.

Thanks for bringing some lovely images to my mind of the faery tales that are so magical in our lives as children.

    1. @kittiewalker Hey Kittie, Would you know this is my first post on social media? I probably thought I had not much to offer …

Here is another link to a brandnew and very interesting article on Pinterest

http://mashable.com/2012/01/10/pinterest-business-consumer-engagement/ (see what I mean with my limited technie skills!). Specially interesting when thinking of linking it to a business / web shop. What do you think?

I know what you mean with addictive! But we have some heavyweights to balance our work with: how is Fig doing?

The sun is out today, but temperatures are really down now and hover around 0° C. Chica will love her walk in the afternoon.

      1. @Late_Bloomers

No I wouldn’t have guessed, it is a really cool post.

Your techie skills are just fine, you don’t give yourself enough credit 🙂 another good article from Mashable – I think the uses for Pinterest are just evolving, all the things he discusses are perfectly reasonable. Thinking outside the box to enhance customer experience and engagement is vital. You always need to market where your customers actually – Pinterest is a closed platform at the moment but if it really takes off when the invitation only is lifted, it could indeed be an awesome tool. I can already see some of the benefits without such a huge reach.

Fig is good, he got attacked in the park a couple of weeks ago on his late night walk 🙁 by a huge American bulldog that was off its lead. The woman walking him had no idea how to control the dog. He has his jaws clamped into figs neck for about 8 minutes. It took a lot of physical effort to get her dog off him and she just stood there doing nothing. My eldest daughter ( gemma dearsley ) was totally distraught but handled the situation well. Luckily her boyfriend was with her and was able to get physical with the other dog. Fig took quite a bit of damage to the neck and ear, lots of blood, deep teeth marks but no ripping!!! Fig is now a nervous wreck on walks, trying to get him re-socialised but it is an uphill struggle – poor thing.

The sun is just breaking through here, we have barely gone down to 0° C this year. It is around 10° C at the moment. The squirrels are out, there is blossom on the trees and the birds are making nests. I haven’t even got out in the garden to cut off last years growth yet. Spring is here in early January 🙁

        /hugs

        Kittie

        1. @kittiewalker Kittie, thanks for the lovely words and also for linking the post on FB, you are a gem!

So sorry to hear that about Fig, the worst thing being the psychological damage, have you consider seeing a dog whisperer? We once had a dog, Bobby, a Calgo, who after having been attacked by a Rottweiler on his own territory, started to behave badly out of fear, no dog whisperers at that time, but we put him in company with other dogs on a big scale which helped some. Or, you might give him some squirrels to chase …

We have a federal law in Basel that dogs must be on the leash after 10 pm, makes sense in your case.

Spring in early January, I must be dreaming 😉

          Hugs, Barbara

  7. What a wonderful post and terrific links too Barbara…I am just getting started on Pinterest (my youngest daughter has been loving it for a long time now, and we have done a project or two that she has discovered on Pinterest). I also took on some new projects for the new year…I am using Instagram (an iPhone app that is similar to Twitter, only it is about sharing photos) and loving the photos I am seeing…I also started a Tumblr blog to post my photos to…and I am taking on the NaBloPoMo challenge for January (blog every day, I have failed at it 3 times so we shall see). And the big challenge for me? Getting healthier…I changed my diet and exercise routine and hope that by New Year’s Eve 2012, I am a new person… 😀 It’s always a good thing to challenge yourself isn’t it? ~cath xo

    1. @jonesbabie Hi Cath, Thanks and haha, I feel heavily challenged too (I should give up smoking) so I concentrate on easily (strike and replace with: easier) to be achieved challenges. I have Instagram installed but do not use it (as so many others). Pinterest suits me much better and I have a good feeling about it.

Wow to the NaBloPoMo contest: blog every day, I could not do that, unless my day had 48 hours. A picture a day is feasible and I love your pictures. Why do you not join us, you already have a Tumblr blog, easypeasy! And your pictures are lovely!

Here’s to the new person, send a picture! Hugs, Barbara

      1. @Late_Bloomers how do I set the 366 project up? I noticed the G+ page closed to members on January 1, so where would I post it, on Pinterest? Sounds like fun!

        1. @jonesbabie@Late_Bloomers Cath, you could also set up your project 366 on tumblr, as Barbara and I have. If you click on the word “tumbling” in Barbara’s post, it will take you to her tumblr site to see her photo-a-day there as well.

        2. @jonesbabie@KDillabough Hi Cath, I know this super fast Canadian woman who walks along the beach in winter! Like Kaarina said we put it up on tumblr, the exposure on Pinterest is optional but I like it and it is easy to manage. Are you on Pinterest, if not I can send you an invite to your mail.

          It is fun!

  8. I haven’t jumped on the Pinterest bandwagon yet and quite frankly I don’t know if I’m going to. I have enough internet addictions as it is! I do love the 366 photo project tho! I should have hopped on that one. 🙂

    1. @laliavoce And a wonderful day to you! Yes, these addictions! But Pinterest is easy to use and I fill the boards as I go along my daily routine. Join us in the photo project, you will love it! 😉

  9. Happy New Year Barbara! And Little Prince is a personal favorite too! Yes, I would love to be invited to your Pinterest! That idea sounds interesting to me! As for your last quesion….the first 10 days have been spent cleaning the house, getting rid of everything Christmasy, and then now taking care of the kiddo suffering from stomach flu…and did i mention I think I got it too? Fun way to start the year eh? *sigh*

    1. @jpage.manuel Good morning, Joy, Invite to Pinterest will come your way subitissimo! Hope you are all feeling better, horrible stomach flu, new year purging, eh? I know you like food as much as I do, so not feeling hungry or lusting for something, what can be worse? Speedy recovery!

  10. Hi Barbara,

I just discovered your blog via your comments today on the post by melanieathomp about ‘Why Do You Read?” on the @lifeforinstance blog. I am so glad I did! I think I will spend a good deal of time here.

I love Pinterest. Melanie and I were just chatting on Twitter about it yesterday. I used to pull all kinds of swipe and inspirational photos for various creative projects and file carefully file them in folders for future use. Now I can just collect all my imagery online…so much more convenient. There are so many creative, talented people curating images there – I find it so inspiring. I look forward to following you there too.

Now I need to check out the 366 project was well. Sounds very interesting. Thanks so much for sharing.

    1. @HerSparklemelanieathomp@lifeforinstance How lovely, thank you, Lisa, and welcome! I love your rebel manifesto, nice food for thoughts.

Your love for Pinterest shows in your great boards, how lovely to organise them by colours and attribute moods to it – fantastic. And you are right, there are so many creative and talented people on Pinterest, great inspiration to be found there.

By all means, check out the 366 photo project, it is worth it and imagine what a collection you will have after one year!

I look forward to reading and seeing more from you in the future, thanks again for stopping by and have a lovely Sunday, Barbara

    1. @Justin Mazza Hi Justin, Thanks for stopping by and saying hello. Pinterest has lots of potential for several reasons and I look forward to seeing you there. Make sure to connect there as well!

      Have a lovely Sunday!

    1. @JSJ2020 Ah, ma belle, I wonder too! Where do you find your energy? And I really have some issues with time management. And do we not always think that everybody else is so productive and belittle our own achievements?

I love the sequence in the beginning of The Little Prince when Antoine de Saint-Exupéry speaks about drawing a boa who devours an elephant and asks adults whether they are not afraid. No, they say, why should we be afraid of a hat?

Have a great week, my fellow admirer of the little prince!

  11. Hey Barbara, you are on fire! 2012 is turning out to be great so far, but I can’t officially say anything yet about some of the things that are in motion. As to Pinterest – can I commit to another…why not! Invite me! Oh and loving the 366 Photo Project – thanks for putting me onto it.

    1. @JanineRipper Hey Janine, well , we need a huge fire today as the temperatures are really down below zero!

Looking forward to learn more about your projects – whenever the time is ripe for them! I know the feeling, I am working on some things which hardly move, that’s why I am not mentioning them!

Pinterest is easy and fun, I will send you an invite. And the 366 Photo Project is deeply satisfying, the more for sharing it with you and our friends.

      Have a great week!
