Peach, What Peach?

Last Sunday somebody called me an ignorant!

Me ignorant? And above all about food? You want to know who the “somebody” is or why I was called ignorant? No to the first, yes to the latter.

To soften the blow they gave me two of those precious peaches. It was the first time I have ever seen a pêche de vigne or red vineyard peach:

hidden treasures

red vineyard peach

They only grow in vineyards and there is a limited market for the fruit, probably because the yield is not that big.

Funny, in German we call it black peach but the fruit inside is really red:

grey outside, red inside

the velvety mouse grey fur outside and the red inside

I wanted to know more about, did the obvious thing and googled it:

I was in for a surprise, according to my friends they only grow in some vineyards in the Alsace region in France, but this German website of the Moselle region with Cochem, the picturesque town in its centre, claims to be the metropolis of it.

What do they taste like? Like a sour peach! They are most probably not meant to be eaten raw but to be turned into jams, chutneys, desserts or made into juice and liqueur. They contain twice as much antioxidants as an apple, helping to protect against cancer and arteriosclerosis.

And again I was proven wrong as to the sour taste, I googled the French pêche de vigne and found a post by David Leibovitz, in which he admires the sweetness of the fruit and its taste of “ripe and juicy white peach and a succulent raspberry“.

I have come to the conclusion that my friends have given me a sour red vineyard peach! And they rave about the jam they made with it. I have yet to taste it – thank you, my friends!

It is lovely to discover new things!

  1. KDillabough Hi, Kaarina, happy Sunday! We will make sure to find some sweet ones! Time to go out for a walk and maybe catch some red leaves – love your photography these days. 🙂

  2. The good news, Barbara, is that there is still lots of stuff to discover!  And, especially when it has to do with our tastebuds, quelle bonne nouvelle!

  3. sharonoday Hi Sharon, YES, imagine we knew everything – how boring! Or, if we walked on this earth unaware of all the lovely things to be tasted because we chose to only eat what we know. Here is something for your language skills: Was der Bauer nicht kennt, das frisst er nicht!
I am going to unplug now, like you I have been catching up on lots of things today, time for dinner and some relaxing movie later on!
A wonderful week to you, Sharon!

  4. Late_Bloomers sharonoday “Some people will not eat what they haven’t seen before.”  (Oh, Google, I love you …)  😉

  5. sharonoday  Yeah, sometimes Google is great! This is an old German saying which translates into English “what the farmer does not know, he does not eat”, the rather negative verb “fressen or frisst” is normally used for animals. Here’s to never ending curiosity, Sharon!

  6. Cooksister Hehe, I really loved it – being called ignorant (it was meant in a kind way) and it is so ideally used for this post! But not knowing does not equal ignorant, does it? Ignorance in my opinion is always associated with attitude. I might have an attitude but not this one.
Good to see you, Jeanne!  Have you done any sniffing lately?

  7. That does look yummy. It seems the fruit with the darkest red color have the highest levels of antioxidents!
I vote for the liqueur – would that nullify the antioxidant properties 😉 ?

  8. Lori Hi Lori! Amazing, I did not know that …. see, each day I learn new stuff!
No to the nullifying result of liqueur, I mean, high percentage alcohol is used in medication to ensure a longer lifespan (of the medicament). I am currently taking vitamin D drops each morning and the smell and taste of alcohol are mind blowing! Hope not!

  9. Late_Bloomers Interesting! And while I have your attention 😉 until Livefyre fixes their issue, you need to click the “Follow” beneath the empty comment box at the top if you want to appear to be following your conversation! I tried to tell you this at my place but I’m not sure whether or not you got the email notification because you weren’t showing as “Following”.  I hope they get this fixed soon!

  10. Lori Late_Bloomers Hi Lori! You always have my attention! And I did click the “Follow” button sometime this morning … before heading over to my home turf!
Thanks for the invite to the Hangout, any special subject?

  11. robindavidman Hi, Robin, lovely to see you! When we walk with open eyes we will always discover new things. And I enjoyed teasing my friends a little bit.
I have just enjoyed a walk down memory lane with your Ray Charles’ song “Hit The Road Jack”!
