Today is the first of October and I wish you a healthy start to it!
This morning I started my day with a glass of my home made grape juice. Did I tell you that it is 100 % pure nature, nothing added, no stabiliser, no citric acid, no sugar, no nothing.
Cheers!
There is a strong smell of honey and hint of strawberries in it, no wonder as I made the juice from uva americana or uva fragole (the Italian word for it).
I had some fruit left: a banana, a pear and some physalis and true to my favourite motto WASTE NOT WANT NOT I put them all in the mixer.
Frugality pays it forward
I added this and that, poured the whole lot in a tall glass and decorated it with a mint sprig:
Healthy healthy healthy
Here follows the recipe:
Late Bloomers Healthy Fruit Drink
Serves one
Ingredients
1 banana
1 pear
5 – 6 physalis (cape gooseberry)
1 TS fresh cream
1 yogurt
1 pinch cardamom
1 pinch freshly grated black pepper
1 pinch sea salt
Method
Put fruit and fresh cream in mixer and puree
Add rest of the ingredients and mix again
Serve in tall glass and decorate with fresh mint
You can use any fruit that is past its prime (or not), roasted nuts on top, substitute mint for lemon balm or basil, add some lemon juice or grated zest.
I like the juxtaposition of sweet and spicy, the tartness of the physalis, the rich flavours of the banana and the pear and the after-effects of the freshly grated pepper on my palate.
This is an energy booster sans pareil to your morning. You can still enjoy endless cups of coffee later on!
PS. Did you notice any difference in the photos? I used my sophisticated SLR, maybe there is a new challenge in photography?

First of all…your photos are quite crisp and dynamic so, I think you will have fun with your sophisticated SLR @Late_Bloomers !! But then, your photos are ALWAYS beautiful Barbara!!
I am writing your recipe for the delicious looking healthy drink for future reference. My morning drinks are more boring…just fruit in the house and some kale or spinach. I never thought of putting in cream or yogurt. OR pepper!! But it really does sound fabulous!!
Happy October 1st!!
xoxo
Claudia
Yum! Both the recipe and the photos 🙂 Cheers! Kaarina
YUM. I want to try them all!
SocialMediaDDS Hi Claudia, you make me feel like the queen of all healthy morning drinks! Thank you so much, your visits always put a huge smile in my face and you make my heart glow.
I never tried the green juice stuff, probably because it looks too healthy, what do you pair it with?
Happy Hump Day!
xoxo Barbara
KDillabough Hi, my most charming friend from Canada! Thanks a ton.
It really astonished me to see the difference in quality when comparing the photos shot with the iPhone camera and SLR. What camera are you using? The photos of the red leaves you posted on FB are astonishing – love them!
Have a wonderful Wednesday and I trust you have the same brilliant sunshine today!
Hugs, Barbara
JanineRipper No problem, Janine: hop on a plane, what’s a little distance to us!?
Thanks for stopping by and congrats again on your tackling a new project, you will excel at it because you have the empathy and the experience to go with it!
Hugs, Barbara
Late_Bloomers I use a very simple digital camera, Canon Powershot. I think I’m just lucky with my photography. I see things that move me, and I shoot. I very rarely take multiple shots of anything. Whatever catches my eye, I capture. i feel fortunate that many turn out so well. BTW, your post above was captured here http://paper.li/Tweet4OK/1358960594
Scroll down til you see my avatar and you’ll see it 🙂
KDillabough This is exactly the way I do it. And I am quite happy with my iPhone camera, I rarely shlep a big camera around with me. Great, lovely to see it spread, I will thank them. 🙂
We just got back into healthy shakes. Will have to add this recipe to the mix =) Thanks!
What an healthy start of the day! It looks yummy!
JSJ2020 Hi Muriel, yep and followed by many cups of double espresso! You cannot have the one without the other! Have a great Thursday and hope you do not bump into any old university friends!
Late_Bloomers JanineRipper Distance is nothing. $$$ – well 🙁 Thanks so much for the support. People have generally been wonderful, with only the few naysayers. I am excited and nervous!
Oh YES! People will always have tons of well meant advice (can you hear it: I am only thinking for your own good – argh!), KDillabough wrote a post about it at http://www.kaarinadillabough.com/when-expert-advice-on-business-makes-your-head-spin/ and the gist (to me at least) is to trust yourself and make your own mistakes. Beautiful post.
Late_Bloomers KDillabough Thanks! I will check it out now. All I know is that, for once in my life, I’m actually following a path I chose for myself with no influence from others. It feels good, self-affirming, and inspiring.
Oh man that looks and sound so delicious!!!!
mandasachs Hi Amanda, thanks and on top of being sooo healthy it is very interesting in its combination of flavours. Today I tried something with strawberries and fresh coriander leaves, wonderful combination!
HeatherJabusch Hi Heather, thanks for stopping by! I have found that bananas really make the drink quite thick, you might want to add some milk. Have fun trying out different mixing recipes. It has been quite a day again and I feel. ready for putting up my feet. Have a lovely evening, Heather!
Thanks, Barbara, for reminding me not to get stuck in a rut when it comes to combinations. Time to find a fresh market with some more “untasted” fruits. (That, by the way, is one of the joys of traveling: discovering new and delicious fruits.) And then the experimenting can begin again …
Wow, that looks like a power smoothie indeed! Yum! As for the pure grape juice, it reminded me of the ‘wine’ they offer during the Eucharist / communion. But hey, what do I know? I don’t really line up that often to drink during Mass ‘cos the thought of sharing the cup with a few hundred people freak me out. Lol!
sharonoday Hi Sharon, one kindred soul to another! I like to combine the most unusual herbs and spices. Let me share a little secret with you: I am not particularly fond of jams as they are normally too sweet and sticky. This is how I got into making chutneys and then I started experimenting with my jams using fresh chilies and herbs! There is no limit to the imagination, this morning I paired strawberries (probably the last of this season, from the canton Thurgau) with fresh cilantro, ginger, roasted hazel nuts, pepper and salt – you have to try this …
jpage.manuel Hi Joy, it sure is! Oh, I thought this was not possible in a catholic church, here in Switzerland only protestants get to drink the wine and eat the bread, whereas in catholic ceremonies, the priest drinks all the wine and the congregation gets to eat the wafer that makes everyone so horribly thirsty. Yak, I would not want to share the cup with so many people.
I agree on jams. Today’s sounds delicious, Barbara, except that our American perfect-to-look-at-but-totally-tasteless strawberries won’t have the foundational flavor of your Thurgau strawberries! I’ll have to look for some locally grown tropical fruit with a similar sweetness/acidity profile instead … 😉
sharonoday Ah, Sharon, this is a global issue, strawberries having been exposed to fungicides, pesticides and fertilizers, prematurely harvested and gassed on top!
You have maracuja, no? Why not pair it with pineapple, lemongrass and thyme ….
Happy market strolling, Sharon!
