A Day In The Life … Early Bird Or Late Bloomer?

Day #22

I knew it! I should have consulted Carolyn on iOS 7 first. You have not installed it yet? Good, go and read The Wonder of Tech’s post NOW (do not forget to come back though).

The display looks nicer now, sleeker and more modern.

It will take me some time to find out all the new stuff but when you read Carolyn’s post you will get a first idea. The control and notification center are great features and offer fast functions. Lots of swiping up and down for different actions.

Other things do not work that well: my CP Pro camera app that I have come to rely on so much on a daily basis refuses its services. I mainly use my iPhone for phone calls and taking pictures, texting and writing emails.

So I resorted to the old installed camera app and fiddled around with it in the garden:

using the panorama function

The panorama function might come handy when on top of a mountain (or Spalenberg) but the above picture looks funny, no?

We have a huge fat spider sitting in the center of its spider web home all day and waiting for some innocent insect flying into the trap. This web is a piece of art and when the sunshine hits the flimsy threads it shows the perfect circle in its glittering glory.

Steadily holding the camera high up over my head and zooming at the same time was quite an artistic balance act, the result less so (is there an anti wiggly function anywhere?):

quadrat and zoom function to catch a spider

More down to earth in all respects: my lemon tree bearing fruit soon ready to be picked and used maybe to make a lemon chicken or some quince lemon chutney.

I still do not know whether installing iOS 7 has caused the problem with the camera app. But one thing is for sure: I am happy for others to use the latest tech gadget first and let me profit from their experiences at a later date and save myself unnecessary trouble.

Day #22 I’d rather be a late bloomer than an early bird.

  1. Well, I tend not to be an early adopter, even though my son works for apple, haha! I’m going to wait a few days before I do the update. Thanks to you and to Carolyn for making the info available. I’ll keep you posted 🙂 Cheers! Kaarina

  2. KDillabough Love your comment, Kaarina, and it put a huge grin in my face! So your son is working for Apple, I always imagine wonderful young talented people working there and getting out those lovely and beautifully designed toys.
I think I got carried away by my daughter’s enthusiasm and just hit the button! Well, it made for a fun post today and great information by Carolyn who immediately got back to me with contact details.
We have to check out what concerts we will go to in Italy … 🙂

  3. I usually wait a few days too before updating. I’m thinking of getting a new iPhone soon so I might not even do it. I did upgrade my iPad last night and so far so good but I haven’t tested any apps yet. So we will see!

  4. Hi Babara, I’m so glad my article was helpful to you. Thanks so much for your kind words.
Yes, early adopters often pay a price but sometimes the excitement of shiny new tech is worth it. The developers of apps may be working hard on an update or may have already submitted it to Apple and are waiting for approval.
The best course is to contact the developer. They may not be aware of the glitch you are experiencing so can be alerted to the issue. Too many people fire off a bad review on iTunes without letting the developer know about the issue.
Good luck with Camera Pro Plus. I hope the developers release the update soon. The last update was in July of this year so I predict an update for iOS 7 will be coming soon.

  5. Hi Guys! I’ve tried the Early Adopter thing and it has worked at times. But now I’m looking into Feedburner’s eventual, inevitable demise and wondering how long to wait before making a change in that department. Will things stop changing please, for a little while? 😉 Maybe wonderoftech  has written/will write about this? (Feedburner, I mean 😉
What are you going to do Barbara, KDillabough  robindavidman  if we lose Feedburner?
    Lori

  6. I did the “bleeding edge” routine on all sorts of technology for years.  Now I’m leaning back more, letting the bugs get out of things before changing.  In Portuguese, we say “Devagar e sempre.”  Slowly and forever.  And, funny thing:  in most cases the delay is not earth shattering.  (But I’m happy to read the travails of all my Early Adopter friends …)  😉

  7. robindavidman Hi Robin! You are wise to wait. When you get a new iPhone it will come installed with  iOS7 installed. And like Carolyn said the developers are working on the updates. Have you read her post? You might find some helpful tips there, I always do, well, practically always …
Have a great week and thanks for stopping by!

  8. wonderoftech Hi Carolyn, I am truly grateful for all the helpful information you share so freely and I hope my mentioning your valuable post will help others as well!
Darn, I have not gotten around to contacting the developers yet – this comes from playing truant in the afternoon but it was worth it – every minute of it.
Have a wonderful week and thanks again, Carolyn!

  9. Lori wonderoftech KDillabough robindavidman Hi Lor!i Have we lost Feedburner? Has it not gone out of business ages ago? This shows how tech savvy I am! No, I know it was google reader, I switched to Feedly months ago and for my blog I have used aweber for the last two years. I think there is a free subscription version. Check it out: http://www.aweber.com/ I have some luxury version installed (i.e. I pay $ 19.95 per month) and only use 1 % of its feature. Do not tell anyone!
Taking a break now for dinner and I will be back to visit your porch! See you there, Lori!

  10. sharonoday Hi Sharon, and a wonderful week to you. I like “the bleeding edge” phrasing for describing early adaptors getting nicked and you are right: we can only learn from them (oh, have I said something wrong here? I mean I am a late bloomer after all). Hehe!
A wonderful sunny week to you and YES to slow down!

  11. Late_Bloomers  Before the expression “Early Adopter” came into being, Barbara, we used to call it the “leading edge.”  But with all the nicks and cuts, to me it was more of a “bleeding edge” …!  So you got it right!

  12. sharonoday Late_Bloomers Maybe I can top that with what my grandmother used to say “sticking out its head will cost the hen’s head”? It’s somewhat drastic and fatal but rather descriptive, no?

  13. Late_Bloomerswonderoftech KDillabough robindavidman no – Feedburner still exists but rumour has it not for long! I am really loving Mandrill, though I’m not sure how much it can do. I use it with a Newsletter plugin for Terra Cotta Pendants. I may look into the same set-up for LFI if it comes down to that.
