A Day In The Life … That’s What She Said

Day #10

This evening I went for a walk, I needed some physical exercise after a long day in front of the screen.

Definitely summer has gone and autumn has taken my favourite season’s place. I am still a little bit uneasy with it. Today is the first day I put on socks, flip-flops bye-bye. I do not like it.

I happened to look up at the sky I saw spectacular clouds:

I remembered a discussion I had with a friend of mine how influenced we were (and still are) by what our mothers told us when we were children.

I asked my mother whether she could recall any of her “do and do not” advice. Amazing that she is far more likely to tell me of what had happened than of what she had said. But I guess that words were never her forte.

And that’s what she said to me:

  • Never ask anybody for anything, then you do not have to say thank you to anybody.
  • You with your intelligence can achieve anything.
  • Long thread, lazy girl.
  • Do not postpone what you can do today.
  • Do not take off a single thread before the end of April.
  • When somebody jumps off the bridge, will you jump, too?

And when I did not want to finish the food on my plate:

  • Think of the poor children in Africa

Have you had similar experiences with your mother and father? And how did it influence you?

Day #10: hey, I survived a third of September already, will I make it to the end?

  1. My Gran always used to say to me “N’aer cast a clout w’aer May’s out.” Very similar to your not taking s thread off until April ends, but in local dialect obviously. “Waste not want not.” is another I remember well…oh the memories 🙂

  2. Of course you will make it through to the end of September (one of my favourite months!) One of the perks of Fall is the beautiful cloud formations! And while I hear some people grumbling about the end of summer, and do not enjoy the cold per se, I do enjoy the cocooning time, the snuggling up with a good book, the walks in the beautiful forest!
Hang in there Barbara! And look up!
    Lori

  3. You WILL make it to the end! And it looks like we both experienced some beautiful skies. I had a bird’s eye view to boot! My mother, early on, passed along this quote, which is foundational to my life: from Shakespeare, “This above all, to thine own self be true.” It serves me well. Cheers! Kaarina

  4. Lucylastica2 Hi Lucy, I love dialects! How I would have loved to listen to your Gran (if I may venture a guess: Yorkshire?) and probably not understanding much but she would have explained it to me, would she not? You are a master at “Waste not want not”, loved your post! I grew up with the fables of LaFontaine, the ant and grasshopper still linger … xo

  5. Lori Hi Lori! I love that “Look up”! So true on a different level as well, get the bigger picture, do not linger on petty details. Well, looking up this morning shows me a sky with low hanging clouds and temperature down at 10° C. Time to put on some warmer clothes as well.
Thanks for the encouragement, I am learning “new” things every day: planning and organising for the daily posts. How lovely it would be to have a magician’s hat and each day a post would jump out of it! Or not?

  6. KDillabough Hi Kaarina! I WILL thanks to your encouragement and constant flow of comments. If only all those who say “but I read you” would also leave a comment, this is our reward and acknowledgement of doing something worthy, no?
So it was your mother who gave you the quote, I remember it well from earlier conversation and ever so often it jumps up when I need it – thanks!
She who conquers heights: did you take any pictures? 🙂
