Description
Its silvery shimmer reminds us of our grandparents’ candlesticks and Christmas decorations.
Silver or mercury glass has become fashionable in the last years and it adds a holiday feel to the dark winter nights.
Silver glass is coated on the inside with a silvery finish. A lot of silver-painted decor is on the market, but true mercury glass is a hollow glass form with the silver coating protected inside.
In our days there is no mercury used for the silvery coating, instead a mixture of silver nitrate and glucose is applied.
When it first came on the scene, the English called it “poor man’s silver”, in Germany it is called “farmer’s silver” because it was cheaper than solid silver.
